Pick Batches Training Guide

Learn how to create, assign, and manage pick batches to streamline warehouse order fulfillment.

Understanding the dashboard

The Pick Batches page displays key metrics at a glance to help supervisors manage fulfillment. Available Orders shows orders ready to be batched for picking. Active Batches shows batches currently being picked by warehouse staff. Priority Orders highlights urgent and high-priority orders needing immediate attention. Single Item Orders counts orders with just one SKU, ideal for fast batching. Created Batches shows batches ready to be assigned to pickers. Click any stat card to filter the batch table or take quick actions.

Batch strategies

LollipopWMS offers four batching strategies to optimize picking efficiency. Single Item: Groups orders containing one SKU each. Fastest to pick, ideal for high-volume simple orders. Priority Orders: Batches rush, urgent, or high-priority orders together. Use when SLA deadlines are tight. Customer/Client: Groups all orders for a specific customer into one batch. Perfect for 3PL operations or B2B shipments. Multi Item PTO: Pick-to-order strategy where each order gets its own bin. The picker collects items for multiple orders in one trip, then sorts into bins at a packing station. Choose the strategy that matches your order profile and warehouse layout.

Creating a pick batch

To create a new batch: 1) Select a strategy from the strategy cards (Single Item, Priority, Customer, or Multi Item PTO). 2) Apply filters if needed. For Priority strategy, select which priority levels to include (Rush, Urgent, High, Standard). For Customer strategy, choose the specific customer from the dropdown. 3) Set the batch priority level (Normal, High, Urgent, Rush) to control how the batch appears in picker queues. 4) Configure max orders per batch (default 10, maximum 100). Smaller batches are faster to complete; larger batches reduce trips. 5) Keep "Optimize pick path" checked to minimize walking distance. The system sorts items by location. 6) Click "Create Optimized Batch" to generate the batch. The system validates inventory availability before creating.

Assigning batches

Manual assignment: Click on any batch row in the table to open the assignment modal. Select a picker from the available staff list. The modal shows each picker's current workload. Auto-assign: Click the "Auto-Assign Batches" button to distribute all unassigned batches. The algorithm considers: picker availability, current workload, productivity metrics, and shift schedules. Configure auto-assign preferences in Settings. Filter the table: Use status tabs (All, Created, Assigned, In Progress, Completed) to focus on batches needing attention. Created batches need assignment. In Progress batches are actively being picked.

Batch statuses

Every batch moves through four statuses. Created: Batch is ready but not yet assigned to a picker. Appears in the Created filter tab. Assigned: Batch has been assigned to a picker who has not started picking. The picker sees it in their queue. In Progress: Picker is actively working on the batch. Progress percentage shows items picked vs. total. Completed: All items in the batch have been picked. Batch moves to pack queue automatically. Track completion times to identify bottlenecks and optimize future batching.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pick batch?

A pick batch groups multiple orders together so a picker can collect items for several orders in a single trip through the warehouse, reducing travel time and increasing efficiency.

Which batch strategy should I use?

Use Single Item for high-volume single-SKU orders, Priority for rush/urgent orders, Customer for client-specific shipments, and Multi Item PTO when each order needs its own pick bin.

How does auto-assign work?

Auto-assign distributes unassigned batches to available pickers based on workload balancing, productivity metrics, and shift schedules. Configure preferences in Settings.

Can I change the batch size?

Yes. When creating a batch, set the "Max Orders per Batch" field to any value between 1 and 100. Smaller batches complete faster; larger batches reduce total trips.
